Orthodontic Treatment

The goal of orthodontic treatment is to align the teeth in such a fashion as to improve aesthetics and provide better function of the oral structures and face. There are a number of ways to do this depending on the circumstances of the patient's individual problem.

The active treatment time for most patients is between 18 and 24 months. This is then followed with a retention period which is extremely variable depending on developmental changes in the patient and the stability of the end result. This is the most critical aspect of orthodontic treatment.

Most of our treatments are carried out using braces, otherwise known as full fixed orthodontic appliances. These are now of miniature size and may either be clear, silver or gold in colour.

We also use a number of removable appliances for minor corrections as well as functional appliances for jaw training in growing patients.

Adults are often interested in orthodontic treatment and age perse does not preclude a normal treatment length. Only where necessary, surgery may also be considered as an adjunct to conventional treatment to augment aesthetics and function.

For prospective patients currently investigating orthodontic treatment, please note that no referral is required to see Dr. Cadell and we are also happy to give second opinions and recommend a dentist if you are seeking one.
